Interactive Electronic Entry Our systems feature a durable keypad with a two line backlit display that is mounted in a weatherproof NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) approved enclosure. This keypad system with a two line display provides interactive communication with members of the facility. Our most common design is the “keypad only” system which displays a prompt that asks the customer to enter their membership number… usually a 4 digit number. When the membership number is validated on the System Server Computer, the customer is then asked to enter their PIN (Personal Identification Number). If both the member number and the PIN are valid, the member is greeted with text information on the two line display and they can also receive other information such as an upcoming expiration date, etc. At the same time, the door will be electronically unlocked for a brief period of time, allowing the member to enter the facility. The camera aimed at the entry door will be triggered by motion detection managed by the camera and the digital video software system running on the System Server Computer and a log entry is created for both the facility and the individual member showing the date and time of entry. The interactive nature of this keypad display provides a means of communicating with the member, letting them know if their membership number is valid, if their membership is about to expire and other helpful feedback. Having the digital video system and the interactive electronic entry system integrated in this manner on the System Server Computer allows for easy viewing of the recorded video to verify that the member who entered the facility is, in fact, the member that matches the number entered. The keypad enclosure also contains the relay required to trigger the magnetic door catch to allow entry to the facility as well as sensors that monitor the main door and up to three other doors in the facility. These sensors will indicate if the doors are opened or closed and the last time each door was opened or closed. These door activity reference points in our daily activity logs assist the system operators in pinpointing various video incidents. Optionally, an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) card reader can be added to the keypad enclosure so the member can hold their RFID card near the card reader, gaining access to the facility through the use of the number generated by the card rather than entering a member number and PIN via the keypad. The two line display is utilized the same way in the RFID design. Because of the climate extremes that an outside entry system can be subjected to, the RFID card is the only type of card system we provide. Our testing and research indicates that magnetic stripe or barcode cards will not function satisfactorily in this type of environment. In our 18 years of developing various systems of this nature, we have found the keypad design to be the most satisfactory. Naturally, with any type of card system, the card can be lost or damaged, but the real benefit of the design that uses only the keypad is that there is nothing to leave behind as you exit the gym. In installations where a card system has been used, the member typically has the card attached to their keys. As often happens, they leave the gym after working out and forget their keys inside. With a card system, they can’t get back in the gym… where their card and their car keys are and someone will be getting a call! All of this is avoided with a design that utilizes the keypad entry system. We have also designed systems that use fingerprint verification as a means of allowing access, but the success ratio of these systems is less than satisfactory and tends to become even more challenging when the access point is out in the elements. The high reliability of the “keypad only” system in a variety of climate conditions along with avoiding such scenarios as the card being locked inside the facility is why we strongly recommend the design that uses the “keypad only” approach as the best choice for an electronic entry system. |
